Montclair is located on the
first mountain of the
Watchung
Mountains…Many parts of town offer excellent views of
the NYC skyline with
Manhattan
being just 12 miles east. The population is approximately 38,000
and is very diverse.
The town is noted for its historic architecture and has some
92 individually listed landmarks.
The school system is an excellent one with 1 high school, 3
middle schools, and 7 elementary schools. The district is divided into an
assortment of model magnet programs. The magnet system was put into place
not only ensure a racially balanced environment but to allow parents and
students a choice in terms of what they are most interested in learning at
these early stages. The elementary schools are as follows: Nishuane (K-2)
Gifted and Talented with
Hillside picking up
in the 3rd grade with a lean towards the performing arts…. Watchung is a
math and science magnet school, Northeast focuses on Global Studies, Edgemont
is the only public Montessori school in
New Jersey,
Bradford is affiliated with
Montclair
State
University
and the
Rand
School focuses on environmental science.
There too are plans in place for another elementary school to be built in
the not too distant future.
The middle schools are Glenfield,
Renaissance
School
and Mt.Hebron.
Montclair
High School is the one
institution servicing grades 9-12. It has an excellent reputation for its
academics.
As for transportation, there are 6 train stations within the
town, all offering Midtown Direct train service to Penn Station in
Manhattan. There
too is direct train service to
Hoboken where one
can access the PATH trains to lower
Manhattan.
Many express buses also service this area.
